About the Opportunity
We currently have an opportunity for a Food Services Worker to join our team in Toronto, ON, on a temporary, part-time basis (8 month contract, unionized position)
Reports to: Food Services Manager
Hours of Work: Up to 20 hours per week, Monday through Friday, with evening and weekend work as scheduled. This position is 100% on-site, and hours are set/scheduled by Casey House.
Wage band: $23.33 - $27.02 (4-step grid)
As a member of an inter-professional team, the Food Service Worker will support the kitchen staff in preparing high-quality meals, ensuring cleanliness, and maintaining a well-organized kitchen. This role is perfect for someone passionate about food and eager to learn about culinary operations. In addition, the Food Service Worker will help carry out catering responsibilities for special events within Casey House under the direction of the Dietary Manager.
More specifically, your responsibilities in this role will include, but are not restricted to:
• Assist chefs in the preparation of ingredients, including chopping, measuring, and mixing as required for various recipes and interact in a small group setting.
• Maintain cleanliness and organization of the kitchen, including washing dishes, sanitizing surfaces, kitchen equipment and appliances such as mixers, ovens stove, steam table, and equipment used in food preparation.
• Support kitchen operations by stocking supplies, monitoring inventory levels, and assisting in ordering items as needed and directed by the Dietary Manager.
• Follow food safety and hygiene standards to ensure compliance with health regulations.
• Collaborate with team members to ensure efficient kitchen workflows and timely meal service.
• Recording and maintaining food and equipment temperature records as outlined in department and Toronto Public Health standards and guidelines.
• Labelling and storing of cooked foods, assisting with supply management including receiving.
• Follow organizational policies and guidelines
• Other duties as assigned.
About You
In order to qualify for this role, you will need a minimum two (2) years experience in a kitchen setting, commercial kitchen and/or catering environment.
• A minimum of two years’ experience in a kitchen setting, commercial kitchen or catering environment
• Current City of Toronto Food Handler’s certification
• Preparing and serving food within an institution or health care environment is an asset.
• Experience working with people who use substances, people experiencing homelessness, and those with mental health needs is an asset.
• Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act, WHMIS, sanitation and HACCP code.
• Moderate proficiency with Microsoft Office and Windows based applications
• Familiarity with kitchen equipment such as knives, mixers, ovens, and food processors.
• Basic understanding of cooking techniques and food preparation methods.
• Working knowledge of therapeutic diets and health-based nutritional requirements based on the Canada Food Guide an asset.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
• Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively within a team including volunteers and peers support workers.
• Excellent organizational, analytical, problem solving and time management skills.
• Attention to detail and commitment to delivering high-quality results.
• Positive attitude, willingness to learn, and adaptability in a dynamic environment.
• Ability to lift 50 lb and sit/ stand for extended periods of time.
