About the Opportunity

We currently have an opportunity for a Nursing clinical extern to join our team in Toronto, ON on a contract, part-time basis. 

Hours: Up to thirty (30) hours per week (days, evenings, and nights)

Reporting to the Director of Inpatient Services, the Clinical nursing extern will be working in the capacity as an unregulated health care provider. Nursing clinical externs work in collaboration with the inpatient nursing team under direct and indirect supervision of an appointed registered nurse. They may perform pre-identified Controlled Acts authorized to nursing within the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA) of Ontario delegated to them under the supervision of a nursing professional who is authorized to perform them. The Nursing Clinical Extern will work in a dynamic environment with interprofessional teams to advocate for and promote wellness, while ensuring the delivery of safe quality care.   

More specifically, your responsibilities in this role will entail, but are not restricted to:

  • Practices under the direct and/or indirect supervision of the nursing professional assigned to them on the unit in a manner consistent with organizational policies and professional standards, while considering CNO guidance for unregulated care providers.  

  • Works with unit nurses to ensure that they have the knowledge, skills and judgement needed to perform all actions/duties.  

  • Assisting with personal hygiene care, positioning and transfers. 

  • Assisting with client ambulation, toileting and with meals including feeding.  

  • Participates in client assessments and activities of daily living. 

  • Contribute to care planning, evaluation, and documentation. 

  • Requests assistance with assigned duties whenever necessary. 

  • Conduct assessments such as: falls risk, pain, vital sign, and Braden Scale  

  • Provides measures to ensure skin integrity and reduce pressure injuries. 

  • Assist with comfort measures and client safety by ensuring the environment is clean and tidy free of hazards. 

  • Engage in additional skills via delegation as approved by Casey house leadership team. 

  • Provides transfer of accountability at shift report and when going on break. 

  • Work collaboratively with inpatient team to deliver care effectively.  

  • Maintain dignity and self-esteem of clients and families/friends in delivery of care. 

About You

Candidates who meet one of the following educational criteria will be considered:  

  1. Nursing Students between 3rd and 4th year of a CNO approved 4-year, direct entry Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing (BScN or BN) Program.
  2. Nursing students who have completed year 1 of a CNO approved second level entry (accelerated) Baccalaureate Nursing (BScN or BN) Program. 

Other qualifications include: 

  • Demonstrated commitment to Casey House purpose, values, and philosophy of care. 

  • Demonstrated commitment to a client centred care environment.  

  • Demonstrated evidence of excellent academic standing 

  • Ability to work with clients of diverse cultural and social backgrounds is necessary. 

  • Current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support required 

  • Demonstrated competency with infection prevention and control practices 

  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills 

  • Excellent problem-solving skills, decision making and critical thinking skills. 

  • Demonstrated excellent organizational and time management skills.  

  • Preference will be given to candidates who have successfully completed a recent clinical placement, ideally in a post-surgical, mental health and/or acute care environment.
