About the Opportunity

We currently have an opportunity for a Mental Health Clinician to join our Outpatient team in Toronto, ON, on a temporary, full-time basis (OPSEU Bargaining Unit).

Hours of work: 37.5 hours/week, Monday to Friday, 9AM to 5PM, with one scheduled evening shift during weekdays from 12-8pm

Reporting to the Director of Outpatient Services, you will work collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team members of the Outpatient Department to provide trauma-informed clinical care to Casey House clients with mental health and/or substance use concerns through a harm reduction framework.

As a Mental Health Clinician, you will play a pivotal role in delivering trauma-informed, client-centered care through a harm reduction framework. Reporting to the Outpatient Director, you will collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to provide therapeutic interventions and support Casey House clients with mental health and/or substance use challenges. The role emphasizes health education, individual and group psychotherapeutic support, and fostering professional development within the team. 

Key responsibilities:  

Clinical Care 

  • Provide trauma-informed psychotherapeutic counselling (6-12 sessions) tailored to client needs, addressing issues like trauma, marginalization, and substance use. 

  • Provide immediate intervention and support to stabilize situations and de-escalate conflicts. 

  • Develop and implement individualized crisis management plans, ensuring safety and continuity of care for clients experiencing acute mental health challenges. 

  • Offer flexible, scalable crisis counseling solutions that adapt to diverse client needs and circumstances. 

  • Support clients actively using substances to manage mental health and addiction challenges proactively. 

Program Development and Facilitation 

  • Develop, facilitate, and evaluate therapeutic groups based on client needs, including skills development, CBT, psycho-educational, and interpersonal process groups. 

  • Contribute to developing and delivering health education for clients, staff, peers, and placement students. 

Collaboration and Leadership 

  • Collaborate with the outpatient team to implement and follow up on integrated care plans. 

  • Provide leadership in conflict and crisis de-escalation, including leading code-white responses. 

  • Guide the team in developing group facilitation skills and advancing trauma-informed practices. 

Administrative and Strategic 

  • Assist in identifying client goals and developing personalized care plans in partnership with the Outpatient Program team. 

  • Participate in planning, coordinating, and evaluating outpatient services, including safety and discharge planning. 

  • Actively support program teams in achieving clinical excellence through inter-professional collaboration. 

About You

In order to qualify for this role, you will need a Master’s degree in related health fieldas well as a minimum of five years direct experience providing clinical counselling. 

Education and Experience 

  • Registration in good standing with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO)

  • Proven expertise in brief, solution-focused counselling and familiarity with trauma-informed modalities such as motivational interviewing. 

  • Significant experience in facilitating psychotherapeutic groups, with a preference for those experienced in DBT and CBT. 

Technical Skills 

  • Proficiency in conducting and documenting biopsychosocial assessments, including mental health status exams and risk assessments. 

  • Knowledge of community-based services and electronic medical record systems. 

Additional Skills and Competencies 

  • Strong commitment to harm reduction, equity, and anti-oppressive frameworks 

  • Extensive understanding of the social determinants of health, including poverty, gender equity, and marginalization. 

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills to foster trust and collaboration. 

  • Fluency in a language other than English and/or understanding of sign language is an asset.
